If you are a
writer, or a student, or anyone who has ever felt the desire or need to write,
you know all about the scary thing known as the writer's block. You sit at the
computer, or at your desk with a notebook and pen, ready to write. But nothing
happened. Your mind is completely empty. You feel as if you will never be able
to assemble even five words into something coherent. This is a tragic problem
and many have experienced it. The sad thing about this particular monster, is
that once it's bitten, it will stick its teeth and begin to enter your mind. If
you don't defeat him immediately, it can exist for some time. You will find
yourself thinking "why can I write something?"
There are some
great techniques for killing this very ugly monster:
Just write! Write
down anything, even though it is not related to what you want to write. No
matter how bad it is, it's only important to continue. Even if that doesn't
make sense! Who knows? Somewhere in all the chaos, maybe there are some
extraordinary parts!
Take a walk! If
the weather permits, going out for a walk might help you, because something you
see might break the wall that holds the good ideas hostage.
Remember when you
were in kindergarten? That's right, take a nap! Some of the best ideas come
from dreams. And it is said that we often dream of solutions to our problems.
Meditation is an
easy task, even if you have never practiced before. There are many reliable
sources that can teach you how to meditate. Like napping, meditation offers the
ability to calm the mind long enough to find a solution or idea.
Sports! Sports!
Sports! Do yoga or aerobics, or maybe go to the gym and walk on a treadmill.
When you are there, observe other people in the gym. See if it does not make
your brain give up giving those great ideas.
Sometimes, it
only helps to talk with other writers. There is an expression that many writers
use - "Only other writers really understand this." It's true - it's
hard to explain to someone who doesn't write how sometimes our thoughts and
thoughts don't want to work with us when we arrive at our writing and produce
great ideas. So, contact another author's friend and talk about your author
block. Sometimes the two heads are really better than one.
It doesn't matter
if you write research papers, love letters, or the next international
bestseller - everyone suffers from block writers now and later, even people who
don't consider themselves writers! The important thing to remember, whatever
choice or technique you use, is not to let the writer's block defeat you. You
must destroy the monster!
